Digital Whirling Dervish Experience

The whirling dervish ceremony is one of the most refined expressions of a spiritual journey that has been practiced for centuries. From the earliest gatherings of precursor Sufis, these rituals emerged as reflections of spiritual ecstasy and transcendence, and over time, “sema” gradually merged with the symbolic expressive power of a highly developed religious culture. Having found its ultimate form within the Mevlevi Sufi tradition and becoming closely identified with this order, “sema” is now reinterpreted through the unique experiential possibilities offered by digital art. The “Digital Whirling Dervish Experience” reflects the inner world of the whirling dervish as well as the cultural heritage of Ottoman Sufi tradition, and is carefully crafted through layered visual and auditory elements. Developed through a long-term and large-scale collaborative process, the project draws inspiration from the mental and emotional rhythms of the dervishes, shaping digital reflections and visualizations accordingly. In this way, the audience is presented not only with the refined aesthetics of “sema,” but also with immersive reflections that convey its inner spiritual journey. This versatile and interdisciplinary project offers a completely new experience in which both performers and audiences can find reflections of their own inner journeys, and where the profound symbolic meanings of the whirling dervish ceremony can be experienced more intimately than ever before. Bringing together an ancient tradition with contemporary expression, the project sheds light on a centuries-old spiritual heritage while creating a powerful emotional impact through the language of modern art.
